This is the time of year that Austin residents are thankful we live in Austin, if only so we can attend the South by Southwest (SXSW) trio of festivals on music, film and interactive technology. It’s a chance to see the newest, latest and greatest minds, talents and ideas converge on Austin for a week and a half. What is it exactly? Some people call it a trade show. Some people call it a festival. Some people call it a conference. They’re all right. The main location of SXSW is the Austin Convention Center. If you can, take some time to check it out and enjoy the events.
• SXSW Interactive runs from Friday, March 9 through Tuesday, March 13, 2012. It features new technology and products.
• SXSW Film is Friday, March 9 through Saturday, March 17. This film festival showcases the talents of new and notable directors.
• SXSW Music starts March 13 and ends on Sunday, March 18. It features about 2,000 performers in 90 venues.
Perhaps one of the reasons SXSW is so popular is because Austin is pretty well steeped in culture year-round, with a wide variety of music festivals, museums and art shows. We have a lot of tech-savvy minds at the University of Texas at Austin and many of them stay in the area after graduation to share their talents with local employers.
If you don’t already have badges or tickets for the events, you can still check out some of the concerts and film screenings or register at the door. For more information on SXSW 2012 in Austin, visit sxsw.com.
