Spotlight on South Austin

If you’re looking for an Austin home in an established neighborhood, South Austin could be a good fit you. Considered a great place for spending time outdoors, the South Austin area offers Zilker Park, Barton Springs Pool and a number of parks suitable for picnics and outdoor play. Some of the main neighborhoods of South Austin include Travis Heights, Bouldin Creek, South Lamar and Barton Hills.

The most eclectic neighborhood in South Austin is South Congress, more commonly known to hip locals as SoCo. SoCo is what most people think of when you say South Austin or mention the 78704 zip code. If you like culture and the arts, you’ll be comfortable with the focus on theatre and live performances, art galleries and some great restaurants. Residents gather every month for the First Thursday on South Congress event from Elizabeth Street to Barton Springs Roads to check out the works of local artists.

The Barton Hills community is another popular place to live. Located in the Austin Independent School District (ISD), you’ll find Barton Hills Elementary to be a good school for kids. The area also gives residents a great way to enjoy the outdoors. Walk to Zilker Park to enjoy the weather, or check out to the Blues on the Green, Austin City Limits or Shakespeare in the Park festivals throughout the year.

If you like to go for a morning jog, take advantage of the many running trails in South Austin. If you head up to Lady Bird Johnson Lake early in the morning on a spring day like today, you can hear the University of Texas rowing team practicing out on the lake.
