Preparing Your Austin Home to Sell

When you are ready to sell your home, it is important to walk through and look at it objectively. You will want to prepare it and make at least a few changes to help it sell faster. Once it is listed, there will be potential homebuyers looking at it in person, on virtual tours over the Internet and in Austin real estate listings.

At York Real Estate, we encourage our clients to make their homes a showpiece. It should look like a model home, not a “lived in” one. This will help potential buyers envision the space with their belongings in it. Allow them to see it as a place where they could be comfortable and happy. There are a number of ways to do this.

If your home interior is looking tired and worn, a fresh coat of paint will liven it up and make it look fresh and clean. Choose neutral colors that will blend well with any décor. Clean your home from top to bottom. Launder your curtains and throw rugs. Dust your mantle and empty the ashes from the fireplace. Clean the windows and mirrors until they shine.

Remove anything from view that personalizes your home, such as framed photos. In the kitchen, put away all small appliances when they are not in use. This includes coffee makers, food processors, bread machines and the like. The countertops should be nearly bare. This will also make your kitchen look more spacious.

Prepare all of your rooms as if you are having house guests coming to stay for a few days. Make the beds. Vacuum and sweep the entire house regularly. Empty all of the trashcans. Put fresh towels in the bathroom and keep the hair dryer, curling iron, make-up bag and shaving kit out of sight. Prescriptions and hygiene items should be put away in the medicine cabinet. A light lavender scented air freshener will help it smell clean and pleasant.

Preparing a home for the real estate market takes hard work, but in the long run, it is well worth the effort. Consider using a professional stager to make your Austin home look its very best. Ask your York Real Estate agent to recommend a staging company for the absolute best results in showing your home.
